Understanding IP Rating: IP65, IP66, IP67, IP68 Explained for Outdoor Lights

When shopping for outdoor LED lights, landscape lamps, underground lights, and waterproof lighting fixtures, you will often encounter the term IP Rating. The IP rating standard defines the degree of protection a product has against solid dust intrusion and water ingress. It is one of the most critical indicators to judge whether a lamp is suitable for outdoor, wet, or underground environments.

IP stands for Ingress Protection. It is defined by the international standard IEC 60529. The IP rating consists of two digits. The first digit represents dust protection level, and the second digit represents waterproof protection level.

First Digit: Dust Protection (0–6)

The first number indicates how well the fixture resists solid particles, dust, and foreign objects.

  • 0–5: Limited dust protection, not completely dustproof
  • 6: Full dust-tight. No dust can enter the fixture. This is the highest dust protection level for lighting products.

Almost all professional outdoor lighting products adopt6 as the first digit to ensure long-term stable operation in dusty outdoor environments.

Second Digit: Waterproof Protection (0–8)

The second number indicates the water resistance level, from splash-proof to fully submersible waterproof.

IP65 – Splash & Rain Proof

IP65 fixtures are dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. It is suitable for outdoor wall lights, courtyard lights, and street lamps that only need to resist rain splashing. Not suitable for long-term water immersion or underwater use.

IP66 – Heavy Rain & Wave Proof

IP66 offers stronger water resistance, protecting against powerful high-pressure water jets. It can withstand heavy storms, sea waves, and harsh rainy weather. It is widely used in outdoor landscape lighting, building exterior wall lighting, and park lamps.

IP67 – Short-Time Submersible

IP67 products support temporary underwater immersion. The fixture can be placed in shallow water for a short period without water ingress. It is commonly used for outdoor floor lamps and temporary underwater landscape lights. However, it is not designed for permanent underwater operation.

IP68 – Fully Waterproof & Submersible

IP68 is the highest waterproof level for lighting fixtures. The lamp can be permanently submerged in deep water for long-term operation. It is the standard configuration for underwater lights, pool lights, fountain lights, and buried lights that require 24/7 underwater work.

How to Choose the Right IP Rating for Your Project?

  • Indoor lighting: No strict IP requirement
  • Ordinary outdoor lighting (courtyard, wall): IP65 / IP66
  • Rainy, coastal, windy areas: IP66 or above
  • Pool, fountain, underground, underwater use: Must choose IP68

Final Summary

IP rating directly determines the service life and stability of outdoor LED lights. Higher IP levels mean better airtightness, stronger resistance to bad weather, dust, and water corrosion. For professional outdoor and underwater lighting projects, IP66 and IP68 are the most reliable choices to avoid failure, short circuit, or lamp damage caused by water and dust intrusion.
